recovery glossary
Recovery Glossary
Plain-language definitions of the terms used across the education library. Availability is always stated exactly on the program pages.
- Assessment
- A clinical evaluation that helps determine the safest and most appropriate next level of care. Assessment guides placement and is part of the admissions conversation.
- Case Management
- The connective layer across treatment, housing, medical, family, and community systems - keeping recovery plans practical with logistics and communication.
- Christ-Centered Recovery
- A recovery approach shaped by Christian faith and community. At Verity, spiritual support is offered without pressure and never replaces detox, medical care, psychiatric care, or licensed treatment.
- Continuing Care
- Longer-term check-ins, peer connection, relapse-prevention refreshers, and a clear route back to treatment when more support is needed.
- Detoxification (Detox)
- Medically supervised withdrawal management, typically the highest-acuity entry point into treatment. When withdrawal may involve risk, care should begin with medical assessment and licensed withdrawal management rather than housing alone.
- Dual-Diagnosis Support
- Integrated planning for substance-use concerns alongside anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, and other co-occurring mental-health needs.
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
- Structured substance-use and behavioral-health treatment several days per week while clients live at home or in supportive recovery housing.
- Levels of Care
- The range of treatment intensity from medical detox through residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, outpatient, and continuing care - each matched to clinical need.
- Outpatient Treatment
- Lower-frequency counseling, recovery monitoring, and continuing-care support with greater day-to-day independence and scheduled therapy sessions.
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
- A high-frequency daytime treatment schedule for people who need substantial clinical support but do not require overnight residential treatment.
- Recovery Housing (Sober Living)
- Substance-free housing with accountability, routines, peer support, and coordination around treatment transitions. It is not detox, emergency care, or licensed clinical treatment.
- Referral Partner
- An independently operated provider that Verity coordinates with. Services labeled "Available Through Referral Partners" are provided by those partners, not operated directly by Verity.
- Relapse Prevention
- Recognizing warning signs and having a practical plan to return to recovery after a setback - including the supports and route back that make the plan usable.
- Residential Treatment
- A clinical level of care with round-the-clock structure for people who need a highly supported treatment environment before stepping down to lower-intensity care or recovery housing. It is clinical care, not simply sober housing.
- Withdrawal Management
- The clinical process of monitoring and supporting someone through withdrawal, typically within medical detoxification.
